In late December 2014 the Jacobs Well team was rocked by the sudden loss of Manjula, who had been part of the tailoring team for several years. Manju was a shining light in the unit; she had a wide smile, a deep laugh and the kindest of spirits – read a personal memoir of Manju on the Jacobs Well website. Her presence is greatly missed.
Manju’s passions in life were taking care of her mother and helping all women to feel special, be that through encouragement, dressmaking or beauty pampering. In her memory, Fashion with Heart Creations is establishing a scholarship that will give other young women in Manju’s community the chance to explore their own passions and to learn the skills needed to support themselves and their families.
The Manjula Scholarship will fund a full year’s training for one girl on the new tailoring programme FWH Creations is setting up at the Jacobs Well unit in Bangalore. A limited number of trainees from the local community will be given extensive tuition in pattern cutting, machining and basic tailoring processes as well as a creative module on fashion, colour and design. All training will take place in the safe and secure Jacobs Well unit, giving vulnerable girls a place to grow personally as well as professionally. Fittings, equipment and facilities are all up to international fair trade standards, and on completion of the course employment opportunities will be available in the Jacobs Well production team, offering fair wages, health and social support and a secure foundation on which to continue building a career.
